Award for Enfield apprentice

An Enfield apprentice has been named as the winner of a UK-wide award celebrating the achievements of young people who have overcome personal barriers to train and work in the construction industry.
Christian ‘Chidi’ Nnebe has won the Young Builder of the Year Award 2016 in the 18 to 24 category. He completed his apprenticeship with developer Durkan, which is working on the first phase of the Ponders End regeneration programme, Dujardin Mews, which will provide 38 homes to be allocated as affordable.
During his time as an apprentice Nnebe worked on different projects while dealing with a number of external factors, including being the primary carer for his family.
After completing three levels of bricklaying qualifications with Barnet and Southgate college, he struggled to make the transition to an apprenticeship and was eventually signed up to Enfield Council’s training and employment brokerage where he was introduced to Durkan.
Nnebe finished his apprenticeship in July 2016 and is now in full time employment with Barking Brickwork.
“I’m delighted to win this award and really proud of my achievements,” said Nnebe. “Without any connections in the industry I struggled to get an apprenticeship after college, but this award just proves what you can achieve if you don’t give up.”
