Enfield firm is shipshape for South Africa

by Marco Cillario Thu 12 May 2016, 11:40 am

An Enfield-based provider of navigation and security surveillance tools has been selected to install a radar system on the biggest South African fleet ship.

Kelvin Hughes announced on 5 May 2016 that it had successfully provided its Sharpeye radar system on the SAS Drakensberg, which it claims is the largest and most sophisticated vessel ever built in the country. The ship’s primary role is to support other ships at sea, enabling the South African Navy to deploy its forces for extensive periods over long distances.

The radar will enable the craft to detect objects normally difficult to track, from semi-submersed things to small crafts, even in bad weather conditions. The system also includes a tracker for helicopter approach and control, providing flight safety to the two helicopters the ship is designated to operate.
